For dev tools, GitHub issues are where users hit walls: "does this support X?", "migrating from Y", "we need an alternative to Z because…". Those are moments where an honest pointer helps.
What to search for
- "alternative to Competitor", "migrate from Competitor", "Competitor deprecated"
- Integration requests in adjacent projects: "support for your category"
Our own check on 2026-10-18 found GitHub results for zapier alternative (5 of 12), postman alternative (4 of 12) and 1password alternative (3 of 7) in 30 days. Many GitHub hits are PRs that merely mention an alternative, so use --context words and the intent sort to surface real questions.
How AskHound searches GitHub
The CLI and local MCP call the official GitHub search API (search/issues) from your machine, under your own rate limit. Set GITHUB_TOKEN for 30 searches/min instead of 10. Our servers never fetch or resell GitHub data.
Etiquette
Never open issues or PRs to advertise. Comment only when you directly answer the question asked, disclose your affiliation, and respect each repo's contributing guidelines.

askhound pack run --md today.mdHonest-reply policy (built into every tool response): a human approves every public reply; never auto-post or mass-DM; disclose that you build the product; answer the question first and name alternatives; follow each community's rules. Hacker News, for example, does not allow AI-generated or AI-edited comments, so replies there must be written by you. AskHound finds the conversation. You decide whether you have something useful to say.
